Become a Telephone Crisis Support Volunteer

Lifeline Mid Coast is always looking for good listeners to become Telephone Crisis Supporters.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Lifeline Crisis Supporter. 

Our 24/7 Phone Service is there for all Australians when they are in need of help. And we couldn't do it without the dedication and generosity of our volunteer community.

Lifeline Mid Coast is seeking people who would like to make a difference.

Enhance your self-awareness. Develop personal and professional growth. Give back to your community and help Australians in crisis. 

As a Lifeline Crisis Support Line volunteer you will undertake accredited training that is delivered face to face and via e-learning to give you all that you will need to be an amazing volunteer

All training offered to be an accredited crisis supporter are delivered on behalf of Lifeline Australia RTO 88036.

Register Your Attendance

A Crisis Supporter will:

Train 

Once accepted, you will complete training to become a qualified Crisis Supporter. The training is delivered by Lifeline and you will be supported along the way.

Respond

You will respond to people in need of support via phone, from your local Lifeline Centre.

Crisis Supporters help answer calls from those reaching out for someone to talk to via our 13 11 14 crisis support line.

Listen

You will listen to what’s going on for the person who has contacted you, hear their story and sit with their distress.

Empower

You will support the person to identify their next steps and encourage them to generate and own the action. If needed, you will create a safety plan with them. In this role you will have a real impact on the life of those you support.

What does the Crisis Supporter Training and Commitment involve?

Crisis Supporter Workplace Training (CSWT):

Comprehensive training is provided to our volunteer crisis supporters, will ensure you are qualified to offer a high standard of crisis support that keeps people safe. You’ll complete a training period to give you all the expertise you will need to navigate crisis intervention successfully and empathetically.

Lifeline Australia is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) 88036.

As a designated training site under the Lifeline Australia RTO 88036, Lifeline Mid Coast complies with the National Vocational Education & Training Regulation Act 2011.

The CSWT Course comprises accredited Units of Competency, which is designed to train Lifeline Telephone Crisis Supporters.

The Cost:

$520.00

Full payment at the time of acceptance into the CSWT course is always appreciated.
Payment plans and subsidies are available for prospective students struggling with financial hardship.

The CSWT course is subsidised, the actual financial value of the course is approximately $3400. The nationally accredited training for CHCSS00113 Crisis Support Skill Set consisting of three units of competency: CHCCCS003 Increase the safety of individuals at risk of suicide; CHCCCS019 Recognise and respond to crisis situations; CHCCCS028 Provide client centred support to people in crisis.
  • Topics covered also include Domestic and Family Violence, Mental Health, Suicide, NSSI etc.

Time Commitment

12 months training starting with 10 weeks of  "face-to-face" sessions with an e-learning component, completed prior to attending the face-to-face session

  • As the CSWT course is highly subsidised, we ask for a minimum two-year commitment to Lifeline Mid Coast as a Crisis Supporter
  • A minimum of 92 hours per year of volunteering is required for accreditation as a Lifeline Crisis Supporter
  • A commitment of one 4 hour shift per week is suggested to meet the 92 hours. This allows for necessary breaks due to holidays and illness
  • A minimum of 8 hours professional development (provided by Lifeline Mid Coast) per year

What is Required to become a volunteer Crisis Supporter?

  • Good listening skills
  • Empathy, compassion & commitment
  • A desire to make a positive difference
  • Time and investment for your training - Please be aware that attendance at all training dates are compulsory to complete the course.
  • A minimum of 4 hours per fortnight available to volunteer once your training is complete
  • A police check and Working with Children Check/Working with Vulnerable People Check (WWCC/WWVP) relevant to your state/territory. Please note that these checks are at your own cost
  • Transport to and from your nearest Lifeline Centre
  • Basic computer skills and access to a reliable computer and internet for the training
  • Student contribution towards training costs
