ECLIPSE . . .
ECLIPSE is a group for adults who have survived a suicide attempt
The group focus
A chance to meet and talk to others who have survived a suicide attempt and offers an opportunity to learn skills that may help participants to cope with feelings and thoughts of suicide, in order to stay safe in the future.
Group format and participation
The support group is a closed, confidential group. Participants all start at the same time and complete the eight weeks together, making it more comfortable to share personal information. It is important for participants to attend all groups if possible.
Expectations for the group
Eclipse is a support group, not therapy. We recommend that group participants have additional resources outside of the group such as counsellors or therapists.
“Suicide” can be a hard word to say, let alone be a topic of conversation. In the Eclipse group we are not afraid to talk about suicide. Conversations about what got us to the point where being dead was seen as a better option than living. Conversations about what might be reasons to stay alive; about strategies that may be helpful in keeping us safe, so we can see a more hopeful future.
In the group you will find a safe, non-judgemental atmosphere where you will be able to talk about the things that you don’t like to burden family and friends with.
The group will be held for 2 hours on a Tuesday afternoon for 8 weeks and is free to attend. No referral is required however the support of a health professional is encouraged.
Facilitators
The facilitators are Lifeline staff members, experienced in:
- Suicide crisis support
- Suicide prevention education
- Suicide bereavement
-
Support group facilitation
Research
As this is the first group of it’s kind in Australia, the Eclipse group will be a part of a greater research project, being conducted by University of New England, School of Health. We are eager to ensure that we are doing the best we possibly can for those we are hoping to help— individuals who have attempted to suicide.
Participation in the research component is voluntary. Deciding not to participate will not exclude you from becoming a member of the Eclipse group.

Suicide Bereavement
Learning how to live with loss.
When someone we love or know dies by suicide, those bereaved often experience a very complicated form of grief,
caused by a combination of sudden shock, unanswered questions of ‘Why?’, and feelings of ‘What could I have done?’.
You may experience a range of emotions highlighting the dramatic personal effect that suicide can have.
By talking about it, you can begin heal
If you are dealing with the suicide of a loved one or a friend, it’s important that you feel free to talk about your reactions to suicide openly and honestly.
It’s also important that you receive support that helps you make sense of what has happened.
Talking about it can help you. And it can help others too…
Our Support After Suicide Bereavement Group
Lifeline Mid Coast’s Support After Suicide Bereavement Groups are for adults who have experienced the loss of someone through suicide.
They are open groups, facilitated by trained, experienced people who have also lost a loved one to suicide.
You are welcome to attend, as you feel the need.
An environment of trust
The groups provide a safe and confidential environment of trust for people to talk about what they are going through.
Our participants find that sharing their experience with others, along with listening to the similar experiences of others, is invaluable.
The sense of community and support that comes from participating in our group can help to relieve the intense personal pain associated with suicide bereavement.
The Port Macquarie Suicide Bereavement Support Group
meets on the 4th Wednesday evening of the month January – November from 6pm - 8pm at Lifeline’s rooms, 5 Sherwood Road, Port Macquarie
